Tradition of Glinkowski Carriages

Henryk Glinkowski’s father-in-law began making carriages before 1939 as an apprentice in a factory that manufactured carriages and springs for the army. During WWII he moved to Lodz and began building commercial delivery carriages for bread and other products.

After WWII he married and moved to Krobia and continued making carriages there. In 1956 he opened a factory under his own name, manufacturing the metal parts for wooden carriages built by Grzymyslawski Andrzejewski. Henryk Glinkowski began working as an apprentice for his father-in-law in 1977.

In 1981, Henryk Glinkowski took over the company, just as the Polish economy was becoming capitalistic after the end of martial law in 1982. Together with Andrzejewski, they began exporting carriages to the West.

At about the same time, driving competitions became very popular in Poland and in other countries. Several stud farms came to Henryk seeking competition carriages for their horses. After these carriages were tested by drivers at competitions, Henryk had so many orders he broke off from Andrzejewski in 1985 and began making marathon carriages.

The company grew from 3 employees in 1985 to a staff of 109 seasoned employees in 2000, due to a large export business. The company manufactures 1,200 carriages a year of all types, from 30-passanger horse-drawn trams for use in Holland, to carriages for minis. Approximately 60% of the production are marathon carriages.

Today, the modern manufacturing process is completely done within the factory. Beginning with the in-house design facility, carriages are designed with the horses’ comfort in mind as well as that of the people. Manufacturing is controlled by computerized robotic machinery, insuring precision craftsmanship. Carriages are finished with metallic paint, enamel paint, or powder coated. Upon completion, the plans for each carriage are scanned and archived along with its serial number. The extensive company archive insures replacement parts can be machined exactly as the original.

Henryk Glinkowski began moving his production into a new factory three years ago. By the end of 2000, all facets of production will be in the new facility, which also has a stable of four horses for test driving purposes.

The carriages are marketed through an extensive dealer network throughout Europe. The network includes five dealers in Germany, two in Holland, and dealers in England, Switzerland, Spain, France and Italy. At WSC 2000, Italian, Polish and Dutch teams were to drive Henryk Glinkowski’s marathon carriages.
